Series Trophies and Pennants at CYC Series trophies and pennants are awarded for July, August, and the season to qualified boats. Series awards are made based on cumulative results over the course of the season. Saturday Series President's Cup: Daysailers The President's Cup was presented in 1921 by G. Herbert Windeler, Esq., president of the Chatham Country Club, "to represent the championship of the Baybirds." A series of five races was called the President's Cup races. In 1948, it became the trophy for the over 15' Handicap series (which included Baybirds) and in 1976, it was designated the trophy for the Saturday Daysailer series. Click for the winner list. Commodore's Cup: Beetle Cats The Commodore's Cup was donated in 1927 to the newly formed Pleasant Bay Yacht Club (renamed the Chatham Yacht Club the following year) by its commodore, Edward F. McClennen for the Baybird Class. In 1975, it became the trophy for the Saturday Beetle Cat series. Click for the winner list. Walton Trophy: Sunfish The Nancy Walton Trophy was donated by the Sunfish fleet in honor of their former racing companion and club secretary following her death in 1971 to be awarded to the winner of the Saturday Sunfish series. Dickson Catboat Trophy: Catboats Commodore William Dickson donated this trophy in 1981 to the winner of the Marshall Cat Saturday series, with the stipulation that the winner provides a "meat" dinner to all previous winners. Summers Bowl: 420s The Summers Bowl was donated in 1960 by the children of L.Colin Summers. The family had joined the club in the late 1930s and Colin had spent many hours starting, timing and finishing races. They designated the trophy for the new Day Sailor class. In 1992, it was transferred to the Saturday 420 series. Clary Bowl: Optimists In 1967, Bill Clary, a frequent winner of the Saturday Beetle Cat series, presented a trophy to be given to the first place junior sailor racing in that fleet. In 1975, when juniors were consistently winning the Saturday Beetle Cat series, the Clary Bowl was transferred to the Tuesday Beetle Cats. In 1999 the Clary Bowl was transferred to the Saturday Optimist Series. Click for the winner list. Tuesday Series Rogers Bowl: 420s In 1962, the Samuel S. Rogers family, to commemorate three generations of participation in CYC, presented this trophy for the Tuesday Daysailer series. In 2000, this trophy was transferred to the winner of the Tuesday 1st Race series in 420s. Click for the winner list. Midweek Trophy : Beetle Cats In 1949, CYC secretary Robert Hallock donated a cup for presentation to the Whistler Tuesday series. From 1992 to 1998 the Midweek Bowl was presented to the winner of the Tuesday Sunfish series, and in 1999 it was transferred to the winner of the Beetle Cat Tuesday 1st Race series. Click for the winner list. Howes Bowl : Sunfish In 2004 this trophy was donated to be awarded to the winner of the Tuesday 1st Race series in Sunfish. Click for the winner list. Tomlinson Trophy: Ladies' Series In 1980, the daughters of Nancy K. Tomlinson donated a trophy for the Ladies' Series in memory of their mother who, while not a sailor, had been active in the club for twenty years as a dock crewmember, as a longtime secretary, as the Jib Sheet editor, and as a patroller of races. Opti Challenge Trophy: Tuesday 1st race In 2004 this trophy depicting an Optimist half-model was donated by the Longerstaey family to be awarded to the winner of the Tuesday 1st Race series. Click for the winner list. Midweek Trophy : Lasers In 2007 this trophy was donated to be awarded to the winner of the Tuesday 1st Race series in Lasers. Click for the winner list. Goheen Trophy : 420s In 2006 this trophy was donated anonymously in honor of the Goheen family's contibutions to CYC, to be awarded to the winner of the Tuesday 2nd Race series in 420s. Yorke Trophy : Sunfish In 2006 this trophy was donated anonymously in honor of the Yorke family's contibutions to CYC, to be awarded to the winner of the Tuesday 2nd Race series in Sunfish. Jacobson Trophy : Optimists In 2006 this trophy was donated anonymously in honor of the Jacobson family's contibutions to CYC, to be awarded to the winner of the Tuesday 2nd Race series in Optimists. Click for the winner list. Tuesday Laser Trophy In 2007 this trophy was donated to be awarded to the winner of the Tuesday 2nd Race series in Lasers. Click for the winner list. Junior Series (Wednesday) McClennen Bowl: Beetle Cat In 1953, Commodore Alan McClennen offered a permanent trophy for a class in the children's series. Six years later, he presented a trophy for the Saturday Beetle Series. In 1975, the McClennen Bowl was designated the trophy for the Junior Beetle Cat Series. Ryan Trophy: Sunfish In 1992, Catherine Ryan presented this trophy in honor of the Ryan family for the Junior Sunfish series. Click for the winner list. Doyle Cup: Optimist In 2001 this trophy was presented for the Junior Optimist series. Click for the winner list. Coleman Trophy In 2006 this trophy depicting a 420 half-model was donated to be awarded to the winner of the Junior Race series in 420s. Click for the winner list. Sailing School and Other Club Awards S. Arthur Peterson Trophy The S. Arthur Peterson Shore School Trophy was given by members of the shore school in 1955 in honor of the then Commodore Peterson who had overseen construction of the clubhouse. The trophy was to be given to "a member of the shore school selected by the instructors as the sailor who has progressed the most and has shown the most enthusiasm." The S. Arthur Peterson Award is the most prestigious award given by the club. Click for the winner list. Lane Leighton Trophy In 1955, Charlie Leighton and Julie Lane, the two driving forces behind the creation of the shore school, instituted a year-end elimination race for all students and gave, as a permanent trophy, a milk can which has traditionally been used to dunk the winner. Click for the winner list. Cary/Sampson Award In 1988, the Sailing School decided to present an award for the best volunteer instructor. The following year Anne Cary Sampson gave the Cary/Sampson award to "the volunteer instructor whose dedication and enthusiasm for teaching sailing best exemplifies the volunteerism so necessary to maintain the vitality of CYC." With the advent of the all paid staff, the award is given to the junior instructor who best reflects those traits. Click for the winner list. Mighty Mary Award The Burmeister family donated this award in 1995 for "the female Sailing School member or instructor, whose racing record and support of sailing at CYC most promotes the sport of yachting by encouraging proficiency in seamanship and sportsman-like conduct in sail/yacht racing on the part of yachtswomen." Mighty Mac Award The award was donated in 2004 for "the male Sailing School member or instructor, whose racing record and support of sailing at CYC most promotes the sport of yachting by encouraging proficiency in seamanship and sportsman-like conduct in sail/yacht racing on the part of yachtsmen." John Wesp Award Organized by then Commodore Alan McClennen, Jr. in 1996, this permanent award, the head of a hammer tacked to a plaque, was given in honor of John Wesp, for his long-term efforts to help maintain the club. This award is given to "the club member who best exemplifies the club's spirit of cheerful volunteerism." Click for the winner list. Annual Single-handed Race Go-Mac Hand In 1966, Stephen Goheen and Walter McClennen donated the GoMac Hand. The trophy, a piece of wood shaped like a hand with a hole in it, was given for a single-handed competition in Beetle Cats. The race is an annual unscheduled pick up race. Beetles may be modified to have tiller extensions and hiking straps.
