Promoting Sailing on Pleasant Bay Since 1921

Chatham Yacht Club Sailing School Classes

The mission of the Chatham Yacht Club sailing school is to promote fair sailing, educate young sailors, and instill an enriching, lifelong love of the sport. All students must take a swim test within their first week of sailing school (weather-dependent) and all students must wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD) at all times while on the water or on the dock. The links below include descriptions of the various classes, as well as brief descriptions of the different boats children and adults will sail at CYC.

The Sailing School carries on the tradition of introducing young people to sailing and yacht racing. It is a summer-long program designed to teach sailing, basic boat care, water safety, and sportsmanship to young people. Students are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Enrollment is limited to 75 students per day.

Classes are taught by the Sailing Master, Racing Director, Racing Coaches, and a staff of junior and senior instructors. The sailing program is planned, coordinated, and executed by the Sailing Master and the volunteer Sailing School Administrators, who serve on the club's Executive Committee.

Sailing School is held rain or shine for Crew, Optimist, and Helmsman classes on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday, and for Seaman on Tuesday/Thursday. The 420 Racing Team meets Monday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons. Other classes meet as indicated in their descriptions.

Age ranges provided with class descriptions are for the purpose of providing a typical look at the progression of a sailor through the sailing school. They do not represent guidelines or requirements, with the only exceptions being that students must turn 7 years old by January 1 st of their first season of sailing, and students must turn 14 years old by January 1 st to enter either the 420 Racing Team or Adventure Sailing that season.
